How To Build A Shed In 10 Steps - Outdoor Storage Shed

So you need a storage shed to keep your outdoor items properly protected. You have shopped around to see what’s available, but you just can’t find one that suits your needs. Well, that’s no problem. You can build one yourself ,even if you’re not a carpenter. All that is required is ,for you to follow some quick and easy step by step plans, and you will have it built in no time.

Step One
Is to determine where you want to build it. You need to have a designated area planned out before you begin. What space you have available will determine the maximum size you can build it.

Step two
Once you know your exact size it’s a good idea to rough sketch what you want. There are many home improvement stores that you can take your sketch to. They will draft up your storage shed  plans for you, according to the specs you provide them with. They will also supply you with a list of materials that you will require. So now you have your plans. In addition they will provide you with a guide on how to perform each step.

Step Three
Purchase the materials you will need as outlined in your plan. it’s a good idea to have everything at hand so you don’t have to keep running out for supplies once you start construction.

Step Four
Now you are ready to start. Level your ground and prepare to lay the foundation. You would have already decided whether you are going to have a wood plank floor or concrete slab type.

Step Five
Next comes the side walls. Put your materials aside that you are going to use for this. It is better to construct the walls on the ground then lift them into position once they are together. Just follow your guide for the how to instructions.

Step Six
Now its time to start the roof. You will need to build your trusses. So construct one and then use it as a template for the rest. Once again  follow your guide on how to build the trusses.

Step Seven
Your storage shed should now be taking on some shape. Its time to build the end walls. How you do this will depend on what you have chosen in your plans. Be sure to stay with your original plans.

Step Eight
Now you are getting down to the final steps. The trim is just as important as the rest of your structure. Its what gives it that finished look so don’t scrimp here.

Step Nine
Your last two steps are applying the shingles for the roof then treating the wood. The wood must have some type of protective coating on it to protect it from the elements and rotting. This can be varnish, stains or paints whatever is your preference.

Step Ten
You’re done! All that’s left is to sit back and admire your completed storage shed. If you hadn’t built it yourself you would think it was a professional store bought model.

Shed Design – Little Known Ways to Design a Shed

Building your own shed is really interesting. It adds fun and is also cheap. By preparing your own shed design, you can make the shed look the way you wanted it to be. There are number of things that you need to keep in mind before building a shed.

First decide where you are going to build the shed. Decide how big the garage should be. In this case price should not be a determining factor. In addition to this the appearance of the shed is very much important. You can choose a shed design that best suits your home. You can grow plants around the shed to make it still more beautiful. Your shed designs can have walls around them, which gives it an excellent look. Before building the shed, measure the area where the new shed has to be built.

Natural wood can be considered to build the shed and the storage units within the shed. But this type of wood rots easily when exposed to water. Therefore you can go for Cedar, which is very popular and ideal for building the shed. Metal storage units can be avoided as they form rust very easily. Make a sketch of the shed design. Then you have to measure the size of the floor. The design of the sheds can range from mostly simple ones to complex designs.

The next thing would be to design the walls and roof of the shed. You can also have double doors for your shed otherwise you can go for a single door. Consider a flat roof for the shed. Then place windows for the shed in the appropriate places. You can even have multiple windows. You can have shutters for the windows. You must make sure that it is well maintained and kept clean. Constructing your own garage can be less expensive. There are three types of shed that you can go for. Corner sheds to exactly fit a corner portion next to your house. Vertical and horizontal sheds can be used to make up the additional space left close to your house.

Choosing a Proper Outdoor Storage Shed Plan For Your Garden

Your landscaping is completed for the season and it looks great, except for all the garden tools and equipment that are laying around. Obviously there is a need for a storage area. A storage shed would be the perfect answer. The question is how do you go about this? No doubt you are going to need a storage shed plan. First you will need to determine which type of plan you require. This you can only determine by doing your research as to what your requirements are regarding the shed.

You know you want to store all of your garden items. You most likely know what items you have now and what size storage area it would take. But consider any future garden purchases you may make in the future. For example are you thinking of purchasing a new ride on lawn mower, or a snow blower? This are items you may need to store and your new garden shed may become their home., but only if its big enough.

Then where are you going to put the shed? This will partly depend on what area you have available, plus what style you are thinking of going with. Lets say you have two choices of location. One is tucked away in the back of the garden almost out of site, and the other one is at the edge of the flower bed. The one tucked away will be more difficult to get at. They both will accommodate the size of the shed you have in mind. Here’s where your decision of style comes in. If you use the tucked away area, your style can be pretty basic because its not going to interfere with your landscaping. On the other hand if you choose the more open space, they you are going to want a fancier style that will complement your garden. You will have to keep this in mind when you pick your shed plans.

You will need to have at least a rough budget in mind. When you go to get your storage shed plans you may have the option of choosing your plans according to what materials you want to use. Different materials have different price ranges. For example if the basic plan falls well within your budget then perhaps a more deluxe version will be an option for you.

Be practical when choosing your plan. You are probably going to be surprised as to just how much you are going to have to choose from. If you aren’t careful and stick to your own plans you could get carried away quite easily. Most often the plans will give you a picture of the finished projects. You’ll see several that you really like. Some of them look like little cottages. Now look at them realistically, they have to meet all the needs that your have identified. Pick out two or three that you really like and see if they answer these questions.

1. Are they the size that you need?
2. Will it fit in with the area you have chosen?
3. If it requires a building permit will it meet the criteria?
4. Is it simple and easy to understand for the novice?
5. Does it give a complete list of materials, and will these materials be readily available in your area?

If you have gotten all the right answers, then you just need to choose the shed plans you like the best out of the group and get ready to work

Beginner Organic Gardening Site Selection and Preparation

There are 2 factors to be decided on when starting your garden. They are:

Site Selection.

Select a site near the house. If the garden area is easily accessible from the house, you will be more likely to want to come out and work in it. Areas near the house are also easier to protect. If you are planning to water or irrigate, close proximity to water is also essential. Adequate sunlight is another important feature of the suitable site. Most vegetable crops grown from seed require a minimum of six hours of daily sunlight.

Optimum production will usually require 12 hours of sunlight daily. A level site is also preferable. However, a slight slope can be an advantage in your beginner organic gardening project, by removing excess water. A well-drained, medium textured soil is also desirable. However, in many areas of Tennessee and surrounding states, these soils do not exist. Therefore, select the best soil available that is in a suitable location.

Site Preparation.

The first priority in beginner organic gardening is to have a soil analysis performed, preferably in the fall. A soil test is the only accurate way of knowing the pH and nutritional level of your soil. Information on soil testing can be obtained from The University of Tennessee Extension fact sheet SP291-C.

Apply lime and fertilizer in accordance with the recommendations of your soil test. Work the seedbed to a depth of 6 inches or more. Freshly worked soil should have a uniform granular texture that is neither clods nor dust. This requires that the seedbed have the proper moisture content when worked.

How to Build a Garbage Shed

In the country, one of the chores we must do is to keep the garbage outside and safe from animals until either a garbage man picks it up or we take it to a landfill. For obvious reasons the bags although technically outside must still be kept in some type of enclosure. Bears and raccoons love people's garbage and will go to great lengths to get to their favorite foods. We have had aluminum storm doors peeled back enough to let a raccoon inside for his picnic lunch. We have had wood shed doors ripped from their heavy duty hinges by a bear looking for an easy meal after waking in the spring. There are some very nice plastic or rubber sheds sold for this purpose but experience shows they do not stand up well to the teeth and 4 inch toe nails of a 400 pound black bear.

Pick a location for your shed that is easily accessible to you in the morning on your way out to work. If it is difficult for you to get to very quickly you will start to leave bags out until you get home. That is a big mistake. Bears can smell food miles away and can travel up to ten miles in one day's time. Even with the garbage in the shed and the shed locked, a bear or raccoon may still attempt to gain access. Your job is to keep all but the most determined bears out of your shed. Bears are extremely strong and I've seen wooden roofs and shingles ripped off, heavy duty hinges bent into pretzels and plywood siding shredded. Bears will drag garbage with them if spooked and in turn spread the garbage over a wide area. If you don't clean it l up, it is an open invitation for every animal in the area. Nothing like going outside at six AM and seeing your garbage spread all over your yard.

Once the location is picked I recommend installing a concrete slab for the shed. A three foot deep, six foot wide and five foot tall shed is adequate to hold a good deal of bags. A four inch thick concrete slab is more than adequate for a base. Form the slab with two by fours or two by sixes. If you use two by fours excavate slightly below the forms inside to assure you get a full four inch thickness. Concrete is figured as LxWxD so it would be 3'x6'x.3333=5.9994 divided by 27=.23 Cubic feet. If you are using bagged premix, it will tell you on the bag how many cubic feet of concrete each bag makes. Install some rebar or welded wire mesh n your slab to give it maximum strength. Before the concrete sets, install six inch long anchor bolts around the perimeter of the slab No less than two on each side but four on the long back side would be better Make sure the threads of the bolts project above the finished concrete no less than 2 1/4 inches when all is said and done..Let the concrete dry for a couple of days, strip your forms and back fill the slab. Wire brush the bolt threads to remove any concrete residue form pouring the concrete slab.

The base plate two by four must be pressure treated lumber by building codes as it is in contact with concrete. Install this base plate two by four ad then using the anchor bolts, install a washer and nut on every bolt. After making sure your base plate is level and square firmly tighten all the nuts. Frame the shed wall using a minimum of three two by fours at each short wall end and twelve inch centers on the long back wall. You will attach your hinges to these end posts later on so they must be as strong as possible. Now install a double two by four top plate all the way around the shed lapping each two by four onto the adjoining wall at each end. Most lumber yards sell metal strapping in ten foot lengths or in rolls. Install a diagonal piece of strapping on each wall from the top plate to opposite bottom corner plate on the outside of the framing. Nail the strapping to every stud it crosses and both the top and bottom plates.

You should now have a very strong framing cage for your garbage shed. A great material choice for the exterior is texture 111 plywood. It is extremely strong and is not terribly expensive. Using both a caulking gun adhesive such as trade name liquid nails or similar product, Run a full bead on each stud prior to applying the plywood siding. You can nail the siding but using trim screws is far better and will make the bear's job much tougher to rip the plywood from the studs. Do not cheat on the number of screws you use..Edges should be no more than four inches on center spacing and the fields six inches on center.

Complete all the plywood siding.

Since the roof has such a short span for rafters you may use two by fours for these as well. Twelve or fourteen inch centers is great but sixteen is OK as well. Stronger is better. Frame in all the rafters and add your front and back fascias also made of two by four materials. Do not use a light one by two material as a bear will splinter that in a second. Hurricane anchors for rafters are available in all lumber yards and box stores today in all parts of the world today. Install a framing hurricane rafter anchor to at least every other rafter and securely nail or screw them to the top plates. Make sure every rafter is securely screwed to the top plates as well. Using adhesive glue and screws, install the roof plywood in one piece. Roof plywood should be at least 5/8 inch thick, 3/4 inch is better. Screw patterns are the same as the sides.

Now install your roofing. Whether you use fiberglass shingles, roll roofing or wood shingles a large bear can rip them off in a few seconds. These are replaceable items. What you do not want is for the bear to be able to get through the plywood roof or sides. The doors you build must be extremely strong as well. The doors are only as strong as the hinges you use so pick as heavy duty a set as you can find along with a hasp set. I use one piece of 3/4 inch thick plywood for my doors as it is very difficult to splinter or tear. Reinforce the outside of the doors with a one by four trim and thereby giving your hinges more wood to fasten too. Use carriage bolts to secure the hinges and hasp assembly as they are much stronger than screws and leave little on the outside for the bear to grip. As I left for work one morning, I was greeted by the sight of twenty or so garbage bags ripped open and strewn all over the yard and driveway. An hour or so later of cleanup I had to take the garbage that day as I was sure I would get another visit the next evening and I did. I simply left the doors open to the empty shed and he lost interest.

Put a couple of good coats of paint or stain on your shed and your good to go. Each time I remove the bags I sprinkle some bleach inside the shed to kill or prevent bugs, ants and other critters from making their homes inside the shed. It kills the garbage odor as well. An occasional washing out with soap and water will keep the shed floor clean and odor free.

7 Questions You Need To Know Before Using Shed Plans

For the novice builder it is very important that you have everything in place before you start any project. Of course the best way to do this is to have a action plan. So you have decided, you want to build a shed using a set of plans. Then first we need to put your action plan into place, and start by listing a series of questions you will need answered before you even begin construction.

1. What do you really need the shed for?
To start with you may be thinking its going to be used to store just the garden equipment. Think hard about this. Is it going to end up being a family shed? In other words, are the kids going to want to store their sports equipment in there? Or is the wife going to find a new place for the Christmas decorations, in your shed? So make a hard and fast rule of what the shed will be used for.

2. What size do you want it to be?
Now you know exactly what it is going to be used for, that will give you the size that you are going to want. Don’t forget to plan for the future. If its restricted to garden outdoor items, you will most likely be adding to your collection over the next few years, so you don’t want to have to build a shed all over again.

3. Where are you going to put it?
You need to determine when is the best place for it. It has to be some place accessible, without walking through your flowerbeds. Probably tucked away so it doesn’t interfere with your landscaping. Again think of the future, you don’t want to have to move it.
Now is the area you have allotted for it and the size of the shed you want compatible? If not then there has to be a compromise, either in the space or the size.

4. Does in need to be insulated, waterproof, or open?
If you are in a four season climate then you need to decide what seasons you need the shed to be able to withstand the most.

5.  Do you require a building permit?
Know what your local by-laws are for building a shed. It wouldn’t be nice to get your project finished ,and then have city officials come along and tell you to take it down. Normally you won’t need a building permit if you stay within a specific size, but if you have determined to go larger than what’s allowed, you will have to submit building plans for approval.

6. Now one of the most important questions, What is your budget for this project?
Everything you have decided up to now is dependant on your budget. Its kinds of difficult to set a budget when you haven’t determined the cost of materials yet. Its your budget that’s going to help you when it comes time to get your building shed plans.

7. Where should you get your plans for building a shed?
You have lots of answers now. The purpose, the size, the budget, and now to answer the final question. For this you will need to check out what resources are available to you. Your local home hardware and building center, home planners, and of course the internet.

Simple Tips to Build a Hip Roof

Here are 7 easy steps to build a hip roof.

1. Take clear measurements of your ridge boards length. Just subtract your buildings width from its length.

2. Cut the essential common rafters now. They should be the same as a typical gable roof. Figure out their lengths by using pitch of the roof and the width of your building. Try and measure from seat cut and then subtract just half of your ridge board's width.

3. Nail the common rafter now. Nail it to your ridge boards one side at every end. Raise that ridge. Then nail the common rafters to the opposite side. Make sure to opposite those original two. That should hold the ridge right in place, as you keep building.

4. Lock that ridge right in place. Do this by installing the remainder of your common rafters. Get started at the ridge center for making sure it's straight.

5. Compute your hip rafter's length. It'll run right from your building's corner to your ridge at around 45-degree angle. Take a look at the chart onto the framing square to get your quick reference. You may also deduce the length if you use the Pythagorean theorem!

6. Run a suitable string line down the hip rafter's center. Attach an end of that string right where that hip meets your ridge. Then attach the other end just above the spot where that hip meets with the wall. This would guarantee the hip remains straight while you are installing your jack rafters.

7. The final steps are just about using a suitable rafter table for figuring out the approximate length of your jack rafters. Simply install those onto the layouts. Then check your string line onto the hip while you nail that jack rafters right in place.

Finally, consider adjusting the pressure ever jack rafter puts on that hip for ensuring it is not warping or bowing to either side. This process has to be repeated for each and every corner of your building.

Using Shed Kits Instead Of Building a Shed From Scratch

If you are planning on building a storage shed, make sure you do some homework first. If you are a carpenter or experienced handyman you have the advantage over the novice, in a few ways. You will be able to determine what would be best for you, either using a shed kit or building from scratch. With your experience your have more options based on your knowledge.

You novice builders have the same options, but it’s a matter of what would be the best for you. It really would be worth your while to check out the wide range of selections that are available.  I know, you really wanted to build this from scratch, and maybe feel like you’re cheating if you use a kit. On the contrary, you are making a wise decision, and besides someone has to still put it together, plus you can customize it. It’s that overall finished look that a person takes pride in, not in how many pieces of wood they had to cut.

These prefab storage units give you many options and have lots of advantages. First of all, you can have a choice of materials such as wood, vinyl or metal. If you were to build the shed from scratch, you probably would only be able to use wood, if you didn’t have any knowledge or tools to work with vinyl or metal. With some shed kits because of the way they are constructed you don’t need to worry to much about insulating, because of the way they are constructed. So that eliminates your problem of having to work with insulation.

If you purchase one of the self locking units, then you don’t have to be concerned about installing rafters, which is great, because it also gives you more usable space on the inside. You never have to worry about warping provided you have put it together properly.

Remember I said that you could accessorize it? In other words add your own creativity to it. For example, you can plan where you want the windows to be. You could even choose to put in skylights which not only is practical ,it modernizes the décor as well. What you want to do, and with what accessories are available to you, depends on the style of shed you are choosing, plus the material. If you are accessorizing, it is usually an added expense.

You will be pleased with how simple it is to erect one of these sheds when you buy the package. There are so many advantages to it.

For example...

  • All the material comes with it, There’s no running around trying to find everything you need
  • You are not restricted to style because of your limited building knowledge
  • Your choice of material allows you to choose something that will blend in and enhance your home and property
  • They are sturdy, durable and a real bonus is they are maintenance free
  • If your needs grow, and you need more storage space then you can either add an addition to the existing one, or purchase another one the same.
  • There are no hidden costs. Everything you need is in the package and paid for at the time of purchase. So you know what its going to cost you.

Although remember if you don’t buy one that comes with a base, you will incur extra costs with that, plus don’t forget about the accessories.

How Should We Build in the Coastal South – What Can We Learn From Florida?

I saw the damage done when Hurricanes Wilma and Katrina hit Texas and Louisiana. It was beyond belief.

I lived through the damage caused to Miami by Hurricane Andrew in 1991. I was in the devastated areas the day after the hurricane. The area, which encompassed most of the southern portion of Miami-Dade County, looked like hundreds of bombs had been dropped from B-52's flying overhead. There were houses without most of their second floors, sometimes 3 walls were gone and only one wall on the second floor was left standing. There were gaps in the roof sheathing. The windows and/or exterior doors were blown out. Sometimes there was damage from flooding, if the house was near the ocean. Some areas were just a pile of rubble. The former houses were unrecognizable!

But we in Florida learned many lessons from Andrew. A new code was developed, the Florida Building Code.

However, the rest of the coastal South has not learned anything from Hurricane Andrew or even from Tropical Storm Sandy.

Many years ago I lived in Georgia and went to college there. I even had my first job in architecture in Macon, Georgia, where I had gone to high school. So I worked on buildings and houses which were built with wood framing, sometimes finished in wood siding, but more often finished with brick. This is often referred as "stick construction". Most of the US builds its residential housing and some commercial buildings in stick construction. So what's wrong with this type of construction?

Well, wood is just not strong enough, in my opinion, to sustain hurricane winds. There are those who argue that wood can be built to sustain hurricane winds. Maybe. But I wouldn't want to be in a wood frame house during a hurricane. Wood needs to be perfectly attached to either another wood piece or to a steel strap, joist hanger, or some other type of steel connector. Who can guarantee that each and every connection is perfect? Wood to wood connections with just nails are prohibited in South Florida. No toe-nailing allowed without metal strapping. Where wood trusses are connected to a concrete tie-beam, the wood trusses must be attached with steel straps. In turn, the straps are embedded in the concrete beam.

So what should be the preferred construction for coastal states? What can Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Mississippi, and Alabama, the southern states most prone to hurricanes, learn from Florida?

First, wood construction should be discarded in all of these states, especially those areas near the water. Wood construction should be replaced with concrete block and solid concrete construction. There is no reason FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) should allow this type of construction. In case of flooding from hurricane activity, the wood walls would likely have to be replaced. Why should FEMA pay for that? In addition, wood attracts termites which concrete block does not.

Instead of wood houses should be built out of concrete block. Why does concrete block and concrete work better than wood? Concrete is poured and reinforced with steel. This makes the construction very solid. Since concrete is a liquid when poured, it fills the voids in the block and becomes one with the block. Concrete block construction contains reinforced and grouted cells at all corners, or as an alternate, there are concrete tie-columns.

In South Florida at the top of all walls surrounding the perimeter of the house, there is a concrete tie-beam. This tie-beam is also reinforced with steel, poured in place, and attached to the vertical steel coming out at the corners. Note that this vertical steel comes all the way from the foundation to the tie-beam, making the walls very solid and hard to move.

The Florida Building Code requires in concrete block construction that at each side of a window, at the window jambs, there be steel-reinforced and grouted cells to which the window is attached. In addition, these windows must be tested in an approved laboratory to prove that, when properly attached with the recommended attachments by the manufacturer, the windows will stay in place during hurricane conditions. In almost all high-end residential construction, the windows will be installed with impact-resistant glass. This glass is so hard that it is hard to crack even with a hammer.

Second, I would recommend that the ground floor and second floors be solid, reinforced concrete. The floor acts as a diaphragm and resists lateral loads on the walls keeping them from caving in during a storm.

And lastly, in addition to block walls and concrete floors, if it were my house, I would consider doing a concrete roof, either flat or sloped. Since it is difficult to pour a concrete slab in a sloped condition, I have also poured a flat concrete slab as a roof and then put the trusses with the finished tile as a decorative element on top. This is not normal Florida construction. This is above and beyond what is normal South Florida construction. However, this slab serves a purposes – it makes a hurricane shelter out of any room below because the concrete slab is so strong that even if the trusses blow away, the room and the flat slab will not!

Why do I recommend this double roof? I saw too many roofs during Hurricane Andrew become completely inhabitable because the roof had been destroyed or the gaps were so large that it rained inside the houses. Plywood sheathing is not a very good material to act as an underlayment to a tile or shingle roof. Although roofs have to have the roofing paper attached in a very precise manner as described in the code, and the sheathing also has to be attached to the trusses in a very precise manner, plywood, again being a wood material, is not that strong. Should the roofing tiles or shingles be blown away during a storm, the plywood is the weak link in the system. So if I were considering building a house, I would strongly consider this suggestion. In addition, as an added incentive in Florida, there is a potential credit from homeowner's insurance policies for concrete slab roofs. This credit can be substantial. So I definitely would consider this type of roof.

It sounds radical, but this is building for permanence. When everyone else's house is in tatters, yours could be a sound, habitable dwelling. So next time you build, think about using the Florida construction techniques described above.

A Roof – Function, Design, Preservation

Generally, in the uppermost part of a building is completed by a cover called roof. This part of building has high point looked from function, design and preservation things. Then, these three points of view becomes the consideration of people in applying it in their house.

Start from the function, roof functions as cover that protect the living creature that is living in the certain building. It keeps these living creatures from many things, such as from the consequence of weather. If people live in tropical climate, they tend to choose the type of it that can protect you from sunlight, wind and water in rainy season. The material chosen is different with in subtropical and cool climate. Therefore, the climate has huge influence in choosing it.

There are some kinds of roof design that can be alternative for you in applying it such as gable, hip, gambrel, and mansard, also flat and shed. The architecture of these types is the most popular. Looked from efficiency in the cost, gable roof is the most efficient between others. Therefore, the design also becomes one of considerations for people in choosing the type of cover for their house.

No roof lasts eternally though the installation is perfect. Some elements like sun, rain, hail and wind can reduce the resistance of the roof, therefore it must be replaced. The performance is one of important thing should be noted. Such as by painting, it can increase the performance of your roof. Placing of some devices that are usually placed surrounded the roof, such as the pipe, satellite or skylight also must consider the condition of the roof. The last, check the condition of your roof regularly to prevent any damages broke your roof.

The material of a roof offers many options for people in applying one type of roof. Wheaten straw, banana leaves, sea grass, aluminum or hay are just a few examples of roof. Hay material has special form that becomes attractive choice.

4 Ways to Use Shed Plans To Successfully Build A 12×20 Shed

One of the most important pieces of information you can have at your disposal when building a shed is a good set of shed plans. When building a large structure like a 12×20 shed it is even more critical to have accurate and easy to understand construction drawings. You will use the 12×20 shed plans every step of the way, from the planning stages to loading the shed with your things.

Four Ways the 12×20 Shed Plans Will Help.

Locating the Shed on Your Property.

Figuring out where you will put the storage building is a critical first step in planning. Part of deciding on how large of a shed to build is figuring out where on your property it will fit. When building a 12×20 shed you will need a fairly large piece of ground to build on. Use the shed plans to physically stake out the footprint of the shed on the ground. This helps you get a feel for how it will affect other things in your yard. If after seeing the footprint drawn on the ground you do not like its placement you can easily move the stakes to get the shed placement perfect. Move it around until you are happy with the shed location.

Working With Building Officials.

A 12×20 shed plan almost always needs a building permit. Even if you do not need a building permit it is wise to take the shed plans down to the local building authority and discuss with them what you would like to do. The city or county building department will know about any utility easements on your property as well as regulations on the shed height, proximity to other structures and size restrictions.

Cost Estimates.

Having a good set of shed plans and a material take off will make the job of determining how much the shed will cost to build much easier. By sending the material take off to several building supply stores you can get a good idea of how much the shed will cost to build. The 12×20 shed is quite large and therefore will cost a fair amount to build so it helps to have an idea of your costs before you actually go to the store to order the materials.

Building the Shed.

After going through the planning stages of shed building described above you will be ready to build your shed. This is where the shed plan really show their worth. If the shed plans have accurate and detailed information the there will not be any major questions about the shed building process. Shed plan information like floor framing plans, wall framing plans and roof framing plans are necessary to insure that you end up with the shed you thought you purchased the plans to. Even more important are the fine details like roof to wall connections and truss construction layout details.

If after going through the steps of making sure the shed will fit on your property, checking with the city and getting an accurate cost you are able to build a shed as large as 12×20 then pick your favorite set of 12×20 shed plans and get building. Using these 4 tips will greatly increase your chances of having a great experience building a shed.Christopher has been designing and building homes and sheds for over 20 years. He enjoys helping others get the most out of their building projects by teaching and providing building designs that are easy and cost effective to build.

Nail Gun Safety – Four Framing Carpenter Tips

If you're a framing contractor or a carpenter who works in the construction business, there's a good chance that you know someone who has had a nail gun accident. I would like to share a couple of things that I have learned over the years, using pneumatic air powered nail guns, while framing homes.

1. Safety Glasses – The last few years that I worked as a framing carpenter, building tract houses, we were required to wear safety glasses. Even though I didn't like it, I obeyed the rules and I think that every carpenter should do the same. Make sure that you have safety glasses, whenever you're working with power tools and especially framing nail guns.

2. Every nail gun used for house framing should have a skyhook on it. Sky hooks fastened to the side of the nail gun and can be used to grip on to framing lumber. This is extremely useful, when you're working in high areas, framing roofs or floors.

3. You should never be in a hurry, while you're using power tools, including high-powered nail guns. I was shot in the leg, by another worker who was in a hurry and I even shot myself in the hand one time, because I didn't have the lumber positioned correctly. There are plenty of construction accidents that happen each year, simply because someone was in a hurry. You don't need to be one of them.

4. Don't point or shoot your nail gun at anybody. This was something that happened on the job often as carpenters would take on a Rambo war hero mentality and start shooting at things, including other people. Nail guns are dangerous and you shouldn't forget that it's your responsibility to maintain a safe work environment.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to realize that some tools used in the construction industry, especially those used for framing houses are dangerous. I hope that these four Carpenter framing tips have been helpful. Pass them on to other that you know who work in the construction industry.

Building an Octagonal Gazebo – Steps To Keep In Mind

When building a structure in your backyard to complete your garden or beautiful landscape, you should never sacrifice style. Building an octagonal gazebo is the best way to liven up your garden because it is one of the best designs out there today.

Constructing the Gazebo: To build a regular gazebo you can purchase a gazebo building kit at a hardware store. You can also go by your own plans if you want a real DIY project.

Start out your project by marking your leveled deck area with paint for landscape marking, excavate the area of plants and rocks, and then dig 30"-deep holes for your posts. Once your posts are in the ground, fill the holes with concrete mix and water. Let it sit to dry for 24 hours. Before walking away from your project to let the concrete dry, look over your work so far to make sure that everything is how it is supposed to be.

The Planks: The best type of wood to use for projects such as these is cedar because it is attractive and can resist natural elements. Connect your cedar planks with decking screws to make the frame, and use joists in the middle to support the deck's frame. Add your center post, then cross supports and secure your planks with decking screws to your frame.

Fit your groove and tongue boards together for the construction of the walls and secure them with enough screws until you're satisfied. Secure it all into the gazebo's floor using regular screws. Adding steps are optional after all the previous steps are completed.

Building a Gazebo with an Octagonal Roof: Having a regular gazebo is fine, but if you add an octagonal roof if can make your structure look a million times better. As per instructed before, build your gazebo however you wish.

The Header Beams: Once the majority of the gazebo has been completed, install header beams between each post for supporting your roof rafters. Next, build your hub to form the center of your roof. Once your hub component is finished, elevate it temporarily in the middle of your octagon and install your ridge rafters. This will be done by installing them from each corner of the head beam onto the flat surfaces of your hub.

Form a bird's mouth using two, 2 x 6 to connect over your header beam and it would also help you to make a few miter cuts going across the top of your surface so your roof will lay flat while on top of the pitched octagon.

The Roof: You can now finish the roof's frame by installing additional rafters that will be attached to the bird's mouth over the top of the head beam. Using 2×6 fascia caps tie the rafter's ends together and lay out sheathing over top of your roof's frame. Next, finish your octagonal roof using felt paper, drip caps and some shingles. You will need roof caps to cover the intersections that will be between the roof sections.

Now that your gazebo is finished, you may paint it and add a top coat if that is what you planned on doing afterwards.

Ok it’s a great idea. Now where do we go to find these free shed blueprints and plans? To start with you could check out your local home improvement stores. Some of these have some great options. They often will have a series of standard plans in stock. They will give some of these to you free of charge, in the hopes that you will buy your materials from them. These plans usually consist of the majority of items they carry in their store. Some of them have even written their own series.

Another option is take in a rough sketch of the details of what you are looking for. Many building suppliers will draft up blueprints and plans for you. They may offer to do this for you with some type of commitment that you will purchase supplies from them. Sometimes they will offer this as free deal as a promotion.

Then there is always the internet. Lots of sites are willing to give away the prints and plans for free. One such example is RyanShedPlans. Not because they are generous, but because they hope it will entice you to purchase some of the other items they carry.

These items are usually applicable to what they are giving you at no charge. For example if they give you all the drawings and plans you need., then you are going to have to know how to do the things that the plan says. This is where the extras come in. Perhaps the company that gave you the free shed plans sells some self help, or do it yourself books. They would be pleased to sell these to you. This is not being sneaky. In fact its an excellent business proposal. They help you identify what you need and then offer support where you need it. With the combination of your  plans, and the self help books you need, you’re ready to build one good looking shed!

DIY Shed – Free Shed Plans Recommended

Are you ready to build a shed?

"What kind of shed do you want to build", I ask. "A do it yourself shed", you respond.

Other natural questions to follow would be, what is the purpose of the shed? And what type of building materials are you going to use?

I remember reading about a man that built a shed from pallets. He used pallets for both flooring and walls. Then he used plywood for the roof. I had mentioned this story to my husband and he replied with, "not in our state". Sheds built in Florida have to meet hurricane codes.

I think free is worthwhile because it will help you to understand blueprints and how much easier it is for someone else to design the shed. Then all you have to do is select the best plans for your needs.

Advantages of downloading shed plans from the internet:

You may wish to move a step above free and purchase different types of woods to construct your shed. Pressure treated pine is a good choice.

Cedar is available in many areas of our country. With cedar you can make flooring, roofing, rafters, paneling, walls, siding, trim, windows, shutters, doors, cupola, railings, and fencing.

It is light weight making it easy to handle. This wood will not swell or warp and does well not to split or twist.

Cedar is known or its long life, quality, strength, grain, and no knots to cause wood splitting problems. This wood has its own ingrown preservative.

It resists decay, fungus, and many insects. One of those dreaded insects is the termite. Many of us use the cedar in our linen storage chests and our closets to ward off moths.

Cedar woods are used in indoor and outdoor residential and commercial dwellings. As a woodworking craftsman you will want to make both indoor and outdoor furniture.

Before starting to build your DIY shed please check with your local lumber supplier for best building uses of the cedar wood that you have selected.

You could even choose to put in skylights which not only is practical ,it modernizes the décor as well. What you want to do, and with what accessories are available to you, depends on the style of shed you are choosing, plus the material. If you are accessorizing, it is usually an added expense.

How to Change Large Shed Plans to Include A Shed Garage Door

You can install a shed garage door on your storage shed even if your large shed plans do not show it on the drawings. Even if you have an existing large shed you can modify the shed wall to install the new door. Larger sheds usually hold larger equipment; this is probably why you want to add a shed garage door. Being able to move bigger things in and out of the shed like motorcycles or lawn mowers is one of the great reasons to have a larger door on your shed. If you have a small shed with long walls and want to have better access you may be able to install bigger doors and make it easier to get in and out of the shed. The space requirements for an overhead panel door are about a foot on each side of the door and a foot above the door as well as space for the door to sit when it is in the open position. The following is a brief primer of shed garage door options, what is involved when sizing and installing the header beam and how to install the door.

Shed Door Options.

The most common door being used as a shed garage door is the overhead panel door. It is made up of 4 rigid panels that are connected to each other by long hinges. The door rolls on tracks up out of the way. It is stored in the open position laying horizontal just under the shed ceiling. Panel doors can be bought as a insulated or non insulated. The second option is a roll up door that rolls up into a coil. It is much more flexible. They are made out of plastic or metal. They also roll up on tracks on either side of the door but the coil is stored directly above the door which allows easier hanging storage in the shed.

Installing the Header Beam.

When an opening is created in a shed wall there needs to be a beam installed to hold the roof up over the opening. The bigger the opening the bigger the beam needs to be. Since most shed garage doors are six feet or wider the beams tend to be big enough to warrant using a beam sizing chart or calling the engineer who knows about beams to verify that it will hold the roof structure. The manufactures of beams have a special engineering department that provides free beam sizing information to customers. Contact them directly or through your local lumber salesman. You may need to send them a PDF of your large shed plans. To make sure they understand the exact application you will be using the beam for. Once you get the proper size of beam you can then purchase the beam.

How to Install the Door.

This is really some tips on installing the door. You will most likely have the company you purchase the door from install it. The framed opening for roll up panel type doors is typically exactly the same size as the door. The rails on either side of the door attach to the boards holding up the beam. Because the opening is the same size as the door there is going to be a gap around the door. This gap is covered by trimming the door opening using 2×6 boards as a trim piece. This makes the opening 1 ½" smaller in the vertical direction and 3 inches smaller horizontally. It will give the door a nice finished look.

Using these tips you will be well on your way to update your large shed plans to accommodate the shed garage door. If you have designs for a 12×16 shed plan or similar large shed you can use these tips to add the ultimate in large shed accessories, the shed garage door.
