Crafting a Cattle Shed – Instructions For Constructing A Shed Easily

Though cattle are considered to be sturdy animals, crafting a cattle shed is always a better option for keeping cattle and their food. One can hire craftsman to assemble large sheds but a simple shed for up to ten cattle can easily be a do-it-yourself job.

Laying the floor: Each cattle requires around 50 square feet space so you’ll need to calculate the area needed accordingly. Once calculated, clean the area where you’re going to construct your shed. You can either keep the ground as it is, though a safer choice would be using concrete. Mix a basic mixture of concrete and spread it over the clean area. Be sure to keep the floor flat else it’ll get water-logged, creating an unhygienic surrounding for your cattle. Let the floor dry for at least a day.

Construct the frame: Next you need to form the framing support of the shed. As cattle are fairly large animals, you’ll need to buy sturdy posts. It is recommended to use 4×4 posts. Install these in 3 feet deep holes, every 6-8 feet, according to the size of your shed. Secure them with concrete. Now use 2×6 planks on the top of the vertical posts. Check that the planks are level as you don’t want your shed to be uneven. Now hammer the planks to the supporting posts to provide stability.

Crafting the roof: To create the base of the roof you can use plywood. But an easier option is to use corrugated tin sheets. Use the plywood on trusses and then fix it there to form a base of the roof. This can be done with nails or screws. Now you need to shingle the roof, choose a good quality shingle and then follow the instructions as provided by the factory.

Adding siding: Siding can be made with various materials though corrugated tin sheets are preferred. Buy the tin sheets according to your needed length and width. After this, the sidings have to be painted before they are fixed. Do this for a faster result and after it dries, fix it in place with nails or screws.

Place the doors: You need at least need two doors for your shed and you should also consider creating a few windows for the purpose of ventilation. On two parallel sides of the shed install two fairly strong doors with heavy-duty broad hinges in 2×4 panels. You can use leftover corrugated sheet for the door panel.

Placing windows: For ventilation, windows should be installed in 2×4 frames between the wall posts. The windows should also have shutters which can be made with left over tin sheets.

Final touches: Install locks and sliding bolt on the doors from both the sides. Install locks on the windows too. Check for nails, screws, sharp ends and openings and secure them with limestone and/or concrete. Install the feeders, water tanks and everything else and once again check for leftovers. You can also paint the shed with a color scheme but avoid black to keep the animals cool.
